Antimony prices rise on growing demand, end of China tax credit

NEW YORK -- Antimony prices have strengthened amid a slight increase in demand and the recent cancellation of China's export tax credit.

A European trader said prices have risen to between $5,450 and $5,550 per tonne, ex Rotterdam warehouse, from $5,450 to $5,550 nearly two weeks ago. The combination of more buying and the tax credit cancellation were responsible for the upward movement, he said, along with tightened supplies. "There is a bit more activity and more demand. There seems to be more restocking going on."


A U.S. trader said that Baltimore warehouse prices were about $5,650 per tonne for standard-grade material after hovering at around $5,700 previously. Freight and handling expenses accounted for the price differential from Rotterdam.

He reported doing some steady truckload business, but said customers had ceased pulling forward shipments as they had done in the third quarter. "People are taking scheduled deliveries, but are no longer asking for early deliveries," he said. "People are buying what they need."
